Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
